PFilates: Pelvic Floor Pilates
"Pfilates was created to provide a widely accessible method of recovering or enhancing pelvic floor strength. Pelvic floor fitness is essential for normal bladder and sexual function. Common problems such as urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse, and poor sexual satisfaction are all associated with pelvic floor muscle weakness.
The pfilAtes program was created by Board Certified Gynecologist and pelvic floor specialist Dr. Bruce Crawford to help people, women and men, improve pelvic floor fitness. These basic fitness and mat Pilates movements have been selected based on EMG recordings of the pelvic floor. The three 10 minute routines available in this system are a progressive program of pelvic floor fitness training. " -www.Pfilates.com
Dr. Kristin Burr became a certified Pfilates Instructor after learning about the extreme need for awareness and training of the pelvic floor. Pfilates, a program developed by Dr. Bruce Crawford, along with our favourite pilates instructor, Allison Kares of Fonthill, was designed and has been research-proven to prevent and treat pelvic floor dysfunction such as bladder incontinence, pelvic pain, and overactive bladder, along with more serious conditions requiring surgery such as pelvic organ (bladder) prolapse. Dr. Crawford developed the program after performing over 400 bladder reconstruction surgeries a year, especially knowing that PELVIC FLOOR HEALTH IS A FITNESS ISSUE! Not a surgical or pharmacological issue.
All women can benefit from this simple, easy to implement program, especially women who have been or will become pregnant, as we know significant trauma occurs to the pelvic floor. Women who have had C-Sections are at significantly more risk for pelvic floor dysfunction than those with vaginal birth. And frankly, Kegel's Aren't Cutting It. Many of you also have pelvic pain (SI joint dysfunction or instability, gluteal dysfunction) which are all risk factors for pelvic floor problems.
To date, women's reproductive and gynecological health has been a "taboo" subject, with solutions such as "just wear a diaper" or "take pills" to treat urinary incontinence. We know now that we can PREVENT these problems with proper exercises and education.
The 60 minute course includes a brief introduction, instruction of exercises, selection of exercises, and an option to purchase a DVD, booklet and pilates ball. Students are then prepared to practice Pfilates on their own. For more serious conditions (surgical candidates, people with grade 2 or higher pelvic organ prolapse), the VesyLab EMG analysis is available with Allison Kares, and follow up visits are available if requested.
